Obituary of Rose Marie Meays

It is with great sadness that the family of Rose Marie Meays announce her passing on October 26th in Saskatoon. She leaves to mourn her sons Barry of Edmonton, AB, Brent of Scotch Creek, BC., her daughter Shelley and son-in-law Bruce of Saskatoon and their sons Jamie of Kelowna, BC, Dallan (Lizzie) and Teagan of Saskatoon. She is also survived by her sisters Nettie Pryhitka and Emily LeDrew and brother Andrew Wuschenny. She is predeceased by husband Ralph, son Sheldon and many great friends and family members. Born June 25, 1929 in Goodeve, SK. Rose was the oldest of 11 children. Being the oldest, she was her mother's helper with chores, the other children and making meals. Her school for grades 1-6 was 3.5 miles from the farm, but Rose was eager to attend. Being left handed and able to before starting grade one, it was a huge disappointment when the teachers ended up forcing Rose to switch and learn to write with her right hand. She never forgot this. She told us many stories of herself growing up, one of which was about the lunch she would take to school, lard sandwiches when she was lucky. Rose Left home at age 11 to help on an aunt and uncles farm where she did many of the chores. Here, She attended grades 7-10 at Silverwillow School. Ralph Meays lived across the road while Rose was living in the area and attending school. Rose defied the odds and graduated in 1947 from Yorkton collegiate. Once graduated Rose moved back to the Willowbrook area and worked in the cafe. Rose married Ralph in 1952, and they lived in Yorkton for a time. While living in Yorkton Rose worked at Woolworths and also helped on the farm. In 1957 they moved to their own farm near Willowbrook where they had cattle, grain, pigs, chickens and turkeys. This is where they had 4 children Barry, Brent, Shelley and Sheldon. While being pregnant with Shelley they planted 1000 spruce trees on the farm. There are many wonderful memories of life on the farm! Rose was a very hard worker and an awesome cook and baker. Sundays consisted of lots of food and laughter; mom did all the work while all enjoyed the day! Rose had a knack for gardening. It was part of her entire life! Early on being a necessity and as the years went on she continued to be an avid gardener. Rose was still spending time in the garden at Shelley's farm, once she moved to Saskatoon. As a young mother, Rose decided to start driving school bus during harvest, leaving more time for Ralph to be in the field. Just one more accomplishment she enjoyed and continued till she was 60 years old. They sold and moved off the farm in 1977 at which time they moved back into Yorkton. Rose was forever changed and heartbroken in 1981 when her youngest, Sheldon died from an asthma attack. Her heart will finally be mended with their reunion !! Rose did enjoy life! When she was younger there were many weekends of curling, dances, watching baseball, hockey and was always very active in her church community as long as she possibly could be. Up until she was 87, she was giving others a ride to church! Another favourite pastime for Rose, was reading. She read and did word searches daily, and fought hard to continue, as this also was slowly taken from her. On her last birthday, she mentioned "I missed reading because I was so good at it". We would like to extend our gratitude to the wonderful staff at Hyde Park View, who looked after mom in her last months as the Alzheimer's took her from us. Service Details.
