Obituary of Sharon Kathleen Schaefer

Sharon Kathleen Schaefer (nee Davey), born March 23, 1951 in Victoria, BC, passed away at age 69 on April 17, 2020 at her home in Ituna, SK, due to complications from Huntington's Disease. Sharon was born in Victoria, BC, and lived there until age 11 when her family moved to Calgary, AB, where she finished secondary school and graduated as Valedictorian. She attended the Universities of Calgary and Alberta, obtaining degrees in Home Economics and Education. Her first teaching job took her to La Crete, AB, where she met her future husband and made many lifelong friends. Sharon and Rick married on July 16, 1974, and taught briefly in Prelate, SK, before finding farmland and teaching positions in Ituna, SK. They raised their family and built a passive solar home, fulfilling Sharon's lifelong dreams of farming with animals and living close to nature. Over the years, Sharon was a dedicated member of St. Stanislaus Church, Deer Park Villa group homes, Shamrock Kennel & Obedience Club, and the community development board, and she was passionately involved in dog breeding, sheep farming, and teaching. She loved being a shepherd! Throughout her life, she was an advocate for human, indigenous, and environmental rights, and converted to full organic farming practices in the mid 1980s. She was immensely supportive of her children's activities and interests throughout their lives. The family travelled frequently within Canada, with many special memories from trips across the country and to Vancouver Island and Calgary to visit family and friends. Sharon is survived by her husband Rick, her children Chelsea (Nathan), Kayll (Shannon), and Joelle (Adam), two grandchildren Emmett and Sloan, and her brother John (Mary) and sister Corinne. Sharon was predeceased by her parents, Mollie and Arthur Davey. Many family and friends, including in-laws and nieces and nephews, are mourning her loss. Sharon wanted us to acknowledge that she lived on Treaty 4 Territory and the traditional home of the Metis. There will be a private service held immediately and a celebration of her life at a later date when circumstances allow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Huntington Society of Canada: https://www.huntingtonsociety.ca/. Service Details. Interment Location: Ituna R.C.
