Obituary of Sophie Spilchuk

Sophie (age 92) of Ituna passed away peacefully on December 18, 2019, at the Ituna Pioneer Health Care Centre. She was born on February 2, 1927, in the Beckenham District to Fred and Stephania Premak. She was one of 16 children. She received her education at Winthorpe School. On November 10th, 1946, Sophie married Bill Spilchuk and farmed in the Churchill District. They raised 6 children. Church and religion were very important to her. She loved being outdoors, enjoyed a big garden, worked alongside the men on the farm and especially loved hauling grain at harvest. In her retirement years she became an avid Blue Jays Fan. Sophie is predeceased by her parents Fred and Stephania Premak, her husband Bill (2010), and her brothers: Joe, John, Mike, Pete, Steve, Walter, and Paul; her sisters: Anne, Mary, Olga, Jean, and Rose. Sisters-in-law: Anne (Pete) Premak, Ann (Joe) Premak, Evelyn Premak, Mary Halipchak, Rev. Sister Fotenia Spilchuk, and Dora Kushnerenko. Brothers-in-law: George Ripco, George Dubacz, John Grebinski, Stan Smysniuk, Alex Kresowaty, Alex Halipchak, and Ilko Kushnerenko. She leaves to cherish her memory, her son Michael (Kristine Kolybaba) and their children Colin (Heidi) - [Karina, Brendan, Daniel], Sheldon (Sheila) - [Jake, Maquire, Quaid], Shaun - [Donavan, Kendra, Damon, Kane] (partner Stephanie and her children Bailey and Brady), and Cora - [Camden, Carson]; her son Ernie (Marion Nakoneshny) and their children Richard (Raquel) - [Chelsea, Katelyn, Matthew], Duane (Tammy) - [Taggart, Madison] - [Joey, Brandon, Sarah], Diane (Ryan) - [Tristan, Darian, Joslyn], her daughter MaryAnne (Jack Shymko) and their children, Nancy (Donavon) - [Dena, Cassidy, Duncan], Sara (Marty) - [Alexandra, Jordyn], Laura (Jason) - [Noah, Jasmine, Jaxon], and David (Amie); her daughter Theresa (Terry Dahlman) and their children Danielle (Dave) - [Addison, Charlotte] and Tyler (Whitney); her daughter Pat (Bill Betker) and their children Angie (Curtis) and Kelly (Trevor) - [Leo], and daughter Christine McArthur (and her son William (Kayla) - [Olivia]). She is survived by her sisters: Kathy (Bob) Glassford, Pauline (Ken) Brozer; brother: Ted Premak; sisters-in-law: Rev. Sister Andronica Spilchuk, Mary (Mike) Premak, Joanne (Steve) Premak, Louise (Paul) Premak; brothers-in-law: Bob Glassford and Ken Brozer; and many nieces and nephews. Like "foots in the sand", may the foot that she left behind be our guidance as we journey through life. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten. The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at the Ituna Pioneer Health Care Centre for their loving and compassionate care during mom's last few years. Prayers were held on Sunday, December 22, 2019 preceded by the Holy Rosary led by UCWLC. The Funeral Liturgy was held on Monday, December 23, 2019, both services at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ituna with Rev. Father Basil Malowany and Most Rev. Bishop Emeritus Michael Wiwchar as Concelebrants. The crossbearer was Kelly Viergutz and the epistle reader was Sara Shymko. The responses were led by Ladmer Moskal, Wayne Boczulak and Heidi Spilchuk. The altar servers were Brendan Spilchuk & Daniel Spilchuk assisted by sacristan, Larry Tymiak. Prayer for Baba was presented by Angie Machmer and a eulogy delivered by MaryAnne Shymko. The interment followed in the Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery with Colin Spilchuk, Richard Spilchuk, Shaun Spilchuk, Sheldon Spilchuk, Duane Spilchuk, Tyler Dahlman, David Shymko and William McArthur serving as the casket bearers. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Sophie to the Sacred Heart Special Projects Fund as gifts of remembrance.
