Obituary of Mabel Joyce Sundquist
Mabel Sundquist, 86, of Melville, passed away November 17, 2019. Mabel was born January 3, 1933 to parents Lawrence and Minnie Johnson in Kamsack, SK. Mabel attended Makaroff School in Manitoba from grades 1 to 10, then moved to Goose Lake School in Manitoba, where she completed grade 11 and 12. In grade 12, she was the recipient of the Governor General's Award. Following high school, she worked for a short time as a Telephone Operator at Togo, SK. She then worked as a Nurses Aid in Roblin, MB for 2 weeks, long enough to discover she did not enjoy nursing. She worked for the Royal Bank in Roblin for just over a year, then moved to Winnipeg, MB where she obtained her teaching certificate. Mabel loved teaching, and taught at various schools in Manitoba for the next 6 years. During that time, Mabel met Ivan Sundquist and they were married July 27, 1961. When she married, Mabel retired from teaching in an official capacity, but used her teaching skills to raise her children and create her family's home. Mabel and Ivan farmed near Moosomin, SK for 13 years. In 1974, they moved to an acreage near Melville, SK. When Ivan passed in 1992, Mabel moved into a Senior's home in Melville. Mabel is survived by her three children: Glenn (Shirley) Sundquist of Neudorf, SK; Rosemary (Darren) Johnson of Regina, SK; and Karl Sundquist of Melville, SK. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents; her loving husband; brother, Jack (Ruby) Stinson; sister, Letitia (Chis) Shick; sister Lazelle Johnson. Also left to mourn her passing and remember her life are numerous relatives and friends.
Mabel enjoyed nature and spent most of her time from Spring to late Fall gardening and working in the yard. The Qu'Appelle Valley was a favourite place to explore, with frequent family picnics and hikes. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting and playing the piano. Mabel learned to play the piano as a child and no day was complete without music flowing from her hands. After Ivan's passing, Mabel found comfort in loving her grandchildren and attending family holiday celebrations. Most of all, Mabel loved to read and study the Bible and developed a deep faith that sustained her in later years. Service Details.
