Obituary of Peter Swerhun

SWERHUN - Peter Swerhun of Calder, beloved husband of Sonia entered eternal rest on June 19, 2019 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre at the age of 87 years. Peter was born on June 6, 1932 on the family farm in the Calder district to Andrew and Nettie (nee Kotiv) Swerhun. He attended Minerva School. In July, 1952, he married Ida May Laidlaw at Concordia United Church. The couple were hired to work on a farm in the Canora district. In 1955 Peter and Ida moved to Campbell River, BC where Peter worked in the Pulp and Paper industry for 35 years and here they raised their family. He would be remembered as Fiddler Pete and his Polka Pals playing at many weddings and dances through the years. Ida passed away in the early 90's and in 1992 Peter married Sonia (Onyshko) Moffat in Calgary. They made their home in Calder and here Peter served as village councellor, water technician, handyman, Calder Housing Board member, Senior Centre volunteer and parishioner of St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Calder. He was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Anastasia; his first wife Ida; sons Glen and Gary; brothers Mike, Harry, Bill and John; sisters Mary Harand, Kathleen Hway, Doris Boroletto, Anne & Violet Swerhun (both in infancy). Peter will be sadly missed by his wife Sonia, his children, Andy Swerhun of Campbell River, Harold (Teresa) Swerhun of Grand Prairie, AB and Jennifer Harrison of Campbell River; Sonia's children Linda (Simon) Garside and Donna (Phil) Wachtler; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, June 28, 2019 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Fr. Michael Faryna officiating. The cantor, Yvonne Panchuk sand the responses. The interment followed in the Garden of Devotion at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with James Wachtler, Phil Wachtler, Douglas Wachtler and Andy Swerhun serving as the casket bearers.
