Obituary of Anne Kitchen

KITCHEN - Anne Kitchen of Yorkton entered eternal rest on June 6, 2019 at the age of 93. Anne was born on December 4, 1925 to Michelina (Wolkowski) and Filimon Kuchelema on the family homestead in the Dobrowody District near Rama. She was one of 7 brothers and 6 sisters. Anne attended Dobrowody School for her elementary education as well as working for the neighboring families. At the age of 9 or 10, Anne babysat for families in the neighborhood while the wives helped the husbands in the fields. Upon completion of elementary school, Anne went to work at the Canora Union Hospital. While in Canora, she and some friends attended a dance where she met the love of her life, Bill Kitchen. On October 7th, 1944, Anne and Bill were married at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in the Dobrowody District, a church Anne had been member of. Together, they made their first home on Bill's father's farm in the Burgis district. Their marriage was blessed with six children. Anne and Bill operated the family farm together, Bill on the field and tending to the animals while Anne was in the garden or kitchen. She was proud of her plentiful garden with enough to feed three provinces, and was a gracious hostess to many family dinners showing her skills in traditional Ukrainian meals and deserts. Anne and Bill moved to Canora in the October, 1999. Anne was a true member of her faith. Anne and Bill were active members of the Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church near Burgis, doing everything from cutting grass, cleaning the church, and preparing the food in preparation for the many services they attended. The Ascension Day service, usually in early June, was particularly special to Anne. During the Christmas season, Anne and Bill, together other parish members enjoyed carolling in the neighborhood and around the kitchen table. As well, Anne was a member of the Ascension Church Ladies group. These ladies often spent time together making perogies as a fundraiser for their church, during this time they would catch up on the neighborhood news and share a laugh or two. Besides the Church, Anne and Bill enjoyed visiting and playing cards. They made many trips to Yorkton to play Bingo, then, when they moved to Canora, Anne could catch a ride with her friends to the Bingo hall. In quieter times, Anne would watch TV and crochet or knit. She looked forward to the visits from her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. After Bill's passing in 2004, with the help of family and friends, Anne remained in her residence until October, 2013, when she moved to Porch Light Care Home and then Gladstone Seniors Residence, both in Yorkton. She continued to partake in the activities of the homes. At Porch Light she was the channel changer and the puzzle maker. Due to failing health, Anne moved to the Nursing Home in January, 2019. Anne is lovingly remembered by her daughters Iris Letourneau of Calgary, and Donna (Michael) Humeniuk of Regina, sons David of Winnipeg, Danny (Carol) of Yorkton, Robert of Calgary and Larry (Debbie) of Yorkton.
