Obituary of Walter Winniski

Walter was born February 22, 1925 in Hubbard, Saskatchewan to Walter Sr. and Katherine Winniski (nee Pacula). The family moved between Hubbard and Parkerview, eventually settling in the district of Tulleymet where they built their family farm. In his younger years, Walter enjoyed playing fastball, with pitching his specialty. When other priorities edged out his role as pitcher, he continued to enjoy a good ball game, either live or on television. The young Walter was a musician who played accordion, saxophone and guitar. He performed at local dances and weddings and had fond memories of these events. When his performing days were behind him, he continued to enjoy music. Saturday nights would not be the same without Polkarama. On October 26, 1959 Walter married Genevieve (Gene) Olech. They were true partners in their farming operation, which included grain farming and raising purebred Hereford cattle. Aside from this labour of love, they enjoyed curling and visiting with friends, relatives and neighbours. Walter and Gene retired and moved to Fort Qu'Appelle in 2002. Soon after, Gene suffered a stroke, requiring time in Balcarres Integrated Care Centre. Walter assisted Gene in her recovery until she successfully returned to their home. Further health issues required them to move to Victoria Park Care Home in Regina, where they lived from 2015 until Gene's passing in July 2018. The loss of his beloved Gene was more than Walter could bear. Her passing left him in fragile health. Walter's remaining time was spent in Harbour Landing Village in Regina, where he counted the moments until he could see Gene again. Those moments ended quietly and surrounded by family on February 9, 2019. Walter was 93 years of age. Walter was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Gene, his parents Walter Sr. and Katherine Winniski, brother Joseph and sister-in-law Jean Winniski, sister Elsie and brother-in-law Nick Tymoschuk, brother John and sister-in-law Angela (Nellie) Winniski, sister Olga and brother-in-law Walter Braden, sister Pauline and brother-in-law Joseph Olech, sister Mary and brother-in-law Mike Tyminski, sister Lucy and brother-in-law Mike Spatuk, parents-in-law Albert and Apolina Olech, brothers-in-law Edward and John Olech.
