Obituary of Gerry Muir

Gerald 'Gerry' Muir beloved husband of Karen Muir of Yorkton. Gerry was gentle man with a gift for telling a great story, a love for his fellow man, and a quick tongue for a pun. Although speech became increasingly difficult, he found ways to see the humour in situations and make others laugh until he passed away on Wednesday, January 18th, 2017 at Yorkton Regional Nursing Home. Gerry was born on April 2, 1936. He grew up on the family homestead near Orcadia and attended the one-room Orkney School. He took part of his high school by correspondence before attending Yorkton Collegiate. After Normal School, he taught two years at Saltcoats, upgraded to his Interim Standard Certificate and taught in several Yorkton schools. He completed his B.Ed. at the U of S, then continued to teach and was vice-principal and principal of Simpson School. During his early Yorkton years, Gerry had a lot of fun with his friends singing in barbershop quartets and in church choirs. Gerry married Yvonne Hall and raised four children. Brian and Cameron were born in Yorkton. Regan was born in Victoria during the year he was getting his M.Ed. in Eugene, Oregon. Kirsten was born in Estevan after the family moved to Estevan for Gerry to take the position of director of education. In Estevan, Gerry continued to make new friends and enjoyed woodworking, construction, hunting, fishing, golfing, choir, church activities, and Rotary. After retiring, he sat on the school board. In 2002, he moved to Yorkton and married Karen Conquergood. Together they ran Patrick Place Bed and Breakfast for six years. Gerry and Karen traveled many places together until his disease made this impossible. In all of these, he showed a remarkable talent for connecting with people and making them laugh. Even at the end, Gerry was someone who exuded wit, thankfulness, concern for others, and a quiet faith in God. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Jessie (nee Verhaag)Muir; parents-in-law, Williard and Edith Hall; brothers, Leslie, Ronnie, and Kenneth; sister, Jean Baker; brothers-in-law, Brock Baker and Patrick Hall; nephew, Grant, and niece, Bonnie. Gerry is lovingly remembered by his wife, Karen (nee Stewart); sons Brian (Debra), Cameron (Carolyn), Regan (Holly), and daughter Kirsten Marcia (Scott); step-children Andrea and Craig Conquergood; sisters-in-law Malinda Dong (Herb), Eileen Hall, and Alice Hall, Marjorie, Mary, and special sister-in-law, Joyce (nee McKen); auntie Alice Bittner; grandchildren Iain, Moira, Conall, Al, Lachlan, Kenzie, Logan, Graeme, McKenna, Adam, Kate, Brittny, Riley, Katelyn, Alexandra, Mackenzie, and Matthew; niece, Carol, Brenda (Bob) Baker, Donna (Brian) Gies; grand-nephew, David and grand-niece Erin Clifford (Rob), as well as many other relatives and good friends. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 from St. Andrew's United Church in Yorkton with Rev. Jen Dresser officiating. Cameron Muir and Shirley Batters shared tributes and words of remembrance. Regan Muir served as the scripture reader. Organist, Shani Apland with members of St. Andrew's and Westview United Church Choirs and members of the Yorkton Community Choir led the congregation in the singing of the hymns Holy, Holy, Holy, Will Your Anchor Hold and Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah. The choir anthems were I Thank You Lord, Hymns of Praise and Go Ye Now In Peace. A men's quartet with Tim Linsley, Murray Stewart, Martin Phillips and Jesse Baron sang Be Thou My Vision. Soloist, Wendell Owen sang Those Hearts That We Have Treasured. Interment followed in the Orkney Cemetery.
