Obituary of Metro Prystai

A memorial program from the funeral service may be printed under the "Memories" tab, then choose "Memorial Program". PRYSTAI - Heaven is blessed with another angel. Metro Prystai passed away peacefully with his family at his side on October 8, 2013. Metro lived a very full and humble life with family always at the centre of his world. He was born on November 7, 1927 in Yorkton, Sask to Harold and Annie Prystai. He was one of seven children raised in a strict Ukrainian Catholic family, and the values and morals he learned at a very early age were evident throughout his many years. Excelling in many sport activities in his childhood, Metro ended up choosing hockey over baseball and moved away from home at the age of 15 to play with the Moose Jaw Canucks. After a successful junior career, he was drafted by the Chicago Black Hawks. During his NHL career, Metro played with both Detroit Red Wings and Chicago - and was honored to play on two Stanley Cup Championship teams. Hockey injuries created Metro's destiny. As he was recovering, he met the love of his life, Evelyne Peppler - whom he married and had five children and many years of happiness with. Metro & Evelyne owned a successful insurance business for many years - and decided to retire at a young age, with plans to travel and enjoy their time together. Sadness in the late 80's took both his wife and one of his daughters - but, his courage and determination pulled him through until he was once again able to enjoy life as he once had. Metro was fortunate to find love again. He married Mavis Tulloch in 1994, and they spent several years travelling, spending time with family and friends - and spoiling their grandchildren. The last year of Metro's life has been difficult - with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's and then a stroke and then the loss of Mavis to cancer. But, even in his illness, his kindness, consideration and respect for others was ever apparent. His zest for life wavered only at the very end, when God came to take him Home. Metro was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyne, his daughter, Merrill, and his second wife, Mavis as well as his parents and his brothers, George, Peter and Bill. He will be sadly missed by his children, David (Kathy) Prystai, Karen (Mark) Levesque, Michael (Stephanie) Prystai and James (Lana) Prystai and his precious grandchildren, Emma, Jacob, Avery and Jordan. He also leaves to mourn his brother Harry and sisters Mary and Stephanie and their families and Mavis's sons Scott and Evan and their families. The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Wynyard with Rev. Father Jeffrey Stephaniuk officiating. The responses were led by Sam Lalach and parish choir members. Serving as urn and cross bearers were his Grandchildren, Emma, Jacob, Avery and Jordan. Karen Levesque shared reflections of her father's life in her eulogy. "Everyone who was touched by Metro's Life" were considered as honourary bearers. Members of the Knights of Columbus, Father Delaere Council - Yorkton and Bishop Roborecki Council - Wynyard served in an honour guard. The interment took place in the family plot at Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery. Memorials honouring Metro's life may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or Golden Acres Auxillary as gifts of remembrance.
