I am a former student of Bill’s, from the late 60’s. Yes, Bill taught science, math and geometry, all of which he had a passion for. I remember the day he “caught” me using a slide ruler in geometry class. We were working with different proofs and Pythagoras’s Theorem. He asked what I was using it for and also asked how to use it. He said that it was OK but put it away for the time being. Bill was strict BUT had his moments in class when even he laughed long and hard with us at something that had gone wrong in class.
I remember Bill on the mound pitching in the traditional softball game between the grade eight students and the elementary school staff. Bills pitches were not particularly fast but there was a lot of “junk” on each pitch. John Metropolit was the umpire.
Bill enjoyed curling as well. I seem to recall a green curling sweater.
Bill also had a passion for the reel to reel tape recorders and if memory serves me right had a very nice system for the time.
I remember dealings with Bill long after I graduated. He had a curiosity about how fast the world was changing. In that regard Bill was like my father-in-law. During those years any conversation with him seemed to always have a question tied to it. Looking back at this, I am honored that Bill felt that comfortable enough to ask me.
In short, I have good memories of Bill, and I would be the poorer without them.
