Doug Ukrainetz

Obituary of Doug Ukrainetz

It is with deep sadness and much love that we mourn the passing of Doug Ukrainetz, age 74. He was a loving husband, dad, geedo, brother, uncle and friend to many. Doug passed away at home on the family farm on August 5, 2023.

Doug was born on December 11th, 1948, to Mike and Sophie (Woronuik) Ukrainetz, the youngest of five children. He was born in Insinger, Saskatchewan and raised on the family farm that he would later take over and operate with his family for many years. His love for farming with his son Kirk kept them busy for most of his life. This was something that even several years later drew them closer together. Doug graduated from Theodore School in 1967, he went on to study agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1971, Doug returned from school and married his high school sweetheart, Marlene (Hawreluik) Ukrainetz. He nicknamed her ‘The Queen of Sheho’. They were blessed with four children, Kirk, Karla, Kristie and Kurt.

Doug kick-started his career in auctioneering after getting his degree from the Reisch Auction College in Mason City, Iowa, in 1974. Doug spent many years working at Frontier Auctions and Wadena Livestock before starting his own business, Ukrainetz Auction in 1976. He then worked at Kelvington Auction Mart, Leross Auction Mart, Regina Auto Auction and Sturgis Auction Mart. Doug auctioned across the prairies near and far until he partnered with his daughter Karla. In 2018 they opened Karla’s Auction House in Springside, Saskatchewan where Doug continued to pursue his passion of auctioneering.

There were many passions that Doug had including playing guitar in his band called The Galaxy’s, Melody Drifters and a lot more not mentioned. He was one of the few to play the “Dsymbaly”, enjoyed curling, playing baseball with the Insinger Cardinals, and Troika. Doug especially loved watching his grandchildren participate in various sports like hockey, football and curling. Doug was also an avid member of St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Insinger Highway.

Remembered by his wife and soulmate Marlene Ukrainetz who was married two days shy of 52 years.
