Martha was born on March 8, 1929 to Anton and Donia Smysnuik in the Churchill district north of Ituna, Saskatchewan, the seventh of ten children. She received her education at Churchill School and Ituna High School. On June 1, 1947 she married Fred Spilchak at Sacred Heart Church in Ituna. Together, they farmed for 35 years, raised their family of 5 children and actively served their parish and community. In 1982 they semi-retired from farming by building a house and moving to Ituna, gratified that their son Dennis would continue farming the family homestead. They loved to travel, visit family and support their parish and community. Martha was a tireless and dedicated member of the UCWL. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting and knitting. As the family grew, each new grandchild or great-grandchild would receive a handmade quilt to snuggle up with. These treasured items continue to be fond reminders of Baba's love for her family. Martha loved to cook and bake, creating amazing meals it seemed like whenever two or more were gathered. And of course her perogy making bees, where her family would gather to take lessons in the fine art of forming & pinching and leave with dozens of the best tasting morsels that only Baba could make. Martha also loved to play cards and on occasion she had a tendency to stretch the rules. When confronted to correct her play she would often lament that she could never win because "they won't let me!" In her second courageous battle with cancer, Mom would say she lived a good life and was blessed with a loving family. She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life three sons, two daughters, fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Son Emill (Karen) Spilchak, daughter Gail (Dale) King, son Myron (Joanne) Spilchak, son Dennis (Wanda) Spilchak, daughter Linda (Cameron) Renkas.
