Obituary of Larry Stecyk

STECYK - Larry Fred Stecyk passed away at home in Ituna, Saskatchewan on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at the age of 59. Larry is predeceased by his father, Fred Stecyk who passed away on October 20, 2002. Larry is lovingly remembered by his mother Janet Stecyk of Ituna, SK; sister Shelley (Glenn) Leontowich of Ituna, SK and their children Elisa Leontowich (daughters Ava and Aubree) of Melville, SK and Adam (Rachelle) of Saskatoon, SK; brother Alan of Red Deer, AB and his children Teagan and Cale; brother Lyle (Annette) of Regina, SK and their daughter Amanda. As well as numerous close friends and relatives. Larry was born in Ituna, SK on September 21, 1959. He was raised in Hubbard, SK where he attended school from 1965 to 1973. He then went to Ituna School where he graduated in 1977. Growing up Larry enjoyed sports including hunting, fishing, football, curling, softball and golf. He was also a member of the Hubbard 4-H Club where he excelled at wood working which turned out to be his passion and career profession. In 1977 Larry's first job was as a summer student clearing bush and cutting grass at the Thomas Battersby Wildlife Preserve near Hubbard for what is now the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport. He was employed by this ministry for 42 years eventually being promoted to Construction Site Supervisor. He was responsible for completing capital projects across the province such as campground expansions, new service centres, entrance buildings and fish filleting shacks. In the early 80's Larry also tried his hand at farming but found his passion focussing his lifelong work of helping to make our parks more enjoyable for the thousands who use them every year. He loved being outside, hunting, fishing or just helping anyone who had a garage, deck or fence to build. Growing up he was the best big brother, taught his siblings a lot about the simple things, what is important in life, slowed them down when he saw them taking things too seriously. He was patient and spent time building models, puzzles and meticulous wood art that he shared with family and friends until his passing. Larry played the 6-49 lottery faithfully playing the exact same numbers every week from its beginning. He never won more than a few bucks, but continued to play. He was a member of local service clubs including Ducks Unlimited and the Wildlife Club where he devoted many countless hours to bettering the environment. In addition he took pride in sharing his knowledge through training and delivery of firearm and hunter safety courses. Friends and family were meaningful to him and he would devote his time off on weekends to helping with renovations, construction projects, seeding or harvest. Larry was the Drawmaster at the Ituna Curling Club. He would make a flawless draw every time coming from years of watching and learning from his dad. After dad passed away in 2002, Larry would be close by making sure that mom's needs were always met. He was an unselfish, kind and wonderful man. A dear son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and great uncle. A true close friend to many.
